Xavier University To End Insurance Coverage For Birth Control
Xavier University in Cincinnati has announced that it will no longer provide birth control insurance coverage for employees.
The president of the Catholic university says the decision was prompted by national debate over a provision in President Barack Obama’s health care law that requires insurers to provide such coverage.
The Catholic church opposes contraception, and bishops have taken a forceful stand against the requirement.
Xavier says the change, announced Monday, goes into effect July 1. The university has about 950 faculty and staff and did not know how many would be affected.
Obama last month announced a compromise putting the burden on insurers, not institutions, to provide coverage. While women’s groups are generally supportive of the move, it is unlikely to please religious conservatives.
