Podcast: Opera Abbreviated – Rusalka
The next opera to be shown live, worldwide in movie theaters by the Metropolitan Opera’s The MET in HD series is Antonin Dvorak’s Rusalka, on February 8 at 1 pm.
Dvorak called this a fairy tale with music. The opera was premiered in Prague in 1901, and didn’t come to the Met until 1993.
In recent years the title role has belonged to American soprano Renee Fleming. She will come to the February 8 performance fresh from singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl.
The plot is straightforward if you don’t mind witches, witless princes, a shrewish foreign princess and a heroine who is partly water. Never mind her father, the Water Goblin and her girlfriends, the willis. Hans Christian Anderson told this story in The Little Mermaid.
Get ready for the gorgeous music of Rusalka, it really is magnificent, live from The Met on Saturday, February 8. If you’d rather cuddle up at home, you can hear this performance on Classical 101.
