Music for Bliss- What’s Your Favorite?

For me this has been a lousy week. Executions, the UN, teenagers bullied to death. And its only Thursday!

I turn to music for comfort.

Here are a few of my favorites. Listen and then please let me know what music gets you though the bad times.

I fell in love with the Alto Rhapsody the first time I heard it, at Sanders Theater in Cambridge with my buddy Jane Struss. Ben Zander conducted!

It’s not possible to listen to Marian Anderson in her prime too much.

Alisa Weilerstein just won MacArthur “genius grant” . Here’s why, in music that takes me to its heart, Elgar’s Cello Concerto

And my favorite of all, in sickness and in health, in good times and bad. This reminds me I have a soul, even if the world is going to hell for a few days.

Your turn. What moves you the most?

  • Urban

Verdi, Mozart, and specific singers, such as John Vickers and Placido Domingo.  And the Rolling Stones.

  • Rainer Steinhoff

My “feel good” pieces include the finale of Beethoven’s  Ninth Symphony, his Seventh Symphony, and anything by The Preservation Hall Jazz Band or Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
