Concerto by Local Composer Richard Smoot on Fretworks

The Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra by Columbus-based guitarist and composer Richard Smoot will be featured on this week’s Fretworks.  Our recording from the mid 1990s is with guitarist Lynn Harting-Ware, who also has an Ohio connection.  Although now living in Ontario, Canada, she received music degrees at Kent State University and the University of Cincinnati.

We’ll have music from Nicolo Paganini for mandolin and guitar, the Centone de Sonata No. 4 with Detlef Tewes and Bjorn Bagger.  Guitarist Benjamin Biers will play the Sonata No. 3 by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, and members of the Italian Guitar Trio perform a Landler from the 19th Century by Austrian Joseph Kueffner.

Also on the program this week, Malayan guitarist Philip Hii plays his own transcription of the Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV 998 by Johann Sebastian Bach.  In the video included here, watch him perform the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

Join me for an hour of the classical guitar, and some mandolin this week, on Fretworks, Saturday evening at 7 on Classical 101.
