Gallo’s Kitchen features “the Heart of Italy, the Soul of New Orleans,” and the made-from-scratch, cooked to order food explains its popularity.
Gallo’s always seems to be busy, especially the lively bar area. The decor is simple, wooden floors and tables, and the sound levels are good for conversation.
At Gallo’s Kitchen, the food is the thing.
The Italian and Creole fare is very good, with some of the best New Orleans dishes in town. I started with a local Land Grant 1862 “Kolsch” one of the lighter choices among the 12 beers on tap.
My wife liked her small Caesar (only $4); my cup of gumbo ($5) was outstanding, with a fine roux, smoked chicken, andouille sausage, and tasso ham.
My favorite dish of the night was the special Lake Erie walleye with a soft roasted polenta cake and Louisiana crayfish sauce ($25); my fork also “wandered” to my friend’s Seafood Creole with six huge Diver scallops, walleye, and 8 mussels ($26).
The Chicken Étouffée was also tasty ($14); my jambalaya, loaded with chicken, andouille, and tasso ham ($16) was excellent, but I could only eat half of it.
The rest of the menu includes nightly specials: a polenta, arancini (risotto balls), three appetizers and five entrees, $22.50 and up.
The regular menu offers seven hearty appetizers ($7 – $12.50), including the popular sea salt brined fresh chicken wings; two salads, house and Caesar, with house made dressings and protein add-ons; eight entrees (only $12 -$16); and seven and sandwiches ($10 – $12.50).
Gallo’s Kitchen offers delicious homemade food at value prices, and it is absolutely worth a visit.
