The old Crest Tavern was a popular Clintonville bar for decades. Now, the completely redone Crest Gastropub brings quality, made-from-scratch food, featuring fresh, local, grown-on-site ingredients and creative riffs on new American pub dining.
The outdoor setting is wonderful with a plant-filled patio featuring fresh herbs, tomatoes, flowers. Then there is an entire garden on the roof. Inside, the Crest is light and airy, with a large bar and plenty of seating.
The interesting menu includes bar snacks, like chips, olives and pickles for $3 each; 10 appetizers range from from $8 to $12; salad and soup, with six on the menu from $6 to $13 for the seared tuna entree salad; sandwiches and burgers from $8 to $12 and five different sides from $3 to $5.
At our table of four, we shared the large grilled rustic Caesar salad with spicy chipotle Caesar dressing, served on a butcher block. This salad also comes with chicken or salmon.
One highlight was the excellent Crest burger, cold-smoked house ground burger, with caramelized beer onions, herb mushrooms, Havarti cheese, and oven roasted tomato on an artisan brioche bun. It is one of the best burgers in memory.
The lamb burger, with mint, feta, tzatziki sauce, and caramelized onions on brioche bun, was very good, as was the with asparagus, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, and beets. The wood fired mac & cheese, and the sweet potato fries received high marks from our group.
The beer list is outstanding, with more than 50 varieties, from Ohio to Belgium, well chosen and priced from $4 to $10. There is also a cocktail list, featuring three barrel-aged cocktails that are $10 each, and a small but carefully selected wine list. We had an Orrin Swift Locations “E” which runs $30.
Very good food, value prices, and attentive, pleasant service mean that we will return to The Crest Gastopub soon.
