Imagine students studying the Prohibition period and learning about the impact of those years on the many breweries that had flourished across German Village. Or investigating the impact of some urban renewal projects and learning how the Interstate system changed the face of Columbus and wiped out historic neighborhoods.Â
Those are two of 41 digital video segments and lesson plans developed by our educational team as a part of the landmark Columbus Neighborhoods project. Each segment aligns the content to appropriate standards in social studies for grades 3, 4, 5 and 8; and to American history in high school.
Now this team, led by WOSU’s Marcelita Haskins, has won a national award from the National Educational Telecommunications Association for best use of digital media in the classroom. NETA represents nearly every public TV station in America and its awards are highly coveted. The development team consisted of Matthew Doran, High School Social Studies Coordinator; Karen Fiedler, K-8 Social Studies Coordinator; and Doreen Uhas-Sauer, History Speaks Project Coordinator.
These segments hit home because they are about OUR home. Remnants related to many of the lessons are alive and well down the street or a short drive away. You can review all these short segments and, if you are an educator, access these to use in your classroom at the columbusneighborhoods.org web site. Just click on Lesson Plans.
A special thanks to the State of Ohio and the Ohio Humanities Council for providing the support necessary to produce Columbus Neighborhoods in the Classroom.
