Ohio Ready to Learn Workshop Series

The Ohio Ready to Learn training is a series of three workshops.

Professionalism and Ethics in Early Childhood Programs (Phase One)

Participants will examine the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Code of Ethical Conduct and learn how to use the code to recognize and resolve ethical dilemmas in the early childhood environment.

Using Ohio’s Early Learning and Development Standards as a guide, participants will also practice planning learning experiences that will help young children build positive relationships with others.

Building Partnerships between Families and Early Childhood Professionals (Phase Two)

Participants will practice incorporating families’ knowledge of their children in programming decisions. Participants will also perform exercises to effectively communicate with parents about sensitive topics.

Finally, participants will learn to create environments and experiences that support the development of an awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity in young children.

Including Children with Special Needs in Early Childhood Programs (Phase 3)

Participants will examine and discuss the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act as it relates to the early childhood care environment. Participants will also be able to describe several methods of adapting environments and experiences for individual children, including children with special needs.

Finally, participants will plan learning experiences that will help young children to be able to identify similarities and differences of personal, family and cultural characteristics.

We Do Classroom Demonstrations

Literacy Camps based on SUPER WHY

The literacy camp is built on the signature early literacy approach of the popular SUPER WHY television series.

For one week, preschoolers are immersed in reading-based crafts, games and songs that practice the targeted early literacy skill of the day: Monday—letter identification; Tuesday—rhyming with word families; Wednesday—letter sounds and spelling; and Thursday—vocabulary and comprehension. On Friday, families are invited to join the campers in celebrating what they learned during the week.

Literacy camps are scheduled February and March in pre-Kindergarten (pre-K) classes in four Columbus schools in the south side.

Fun with Numbers and Shapes

Proficiency in math starts with fundamental skills such as counting and identifying shapes. Honing those skills begins in pre-K.

WOSU is boosting the effort with pre-K students with Fun with Numbers and Shapes.

This workshop includes classroom demonstrations and weekly month-long follow-up visits that were scheduled in six pre-K classrooms in the Northland area, January to March 2016.

The fun will be generated by PBS Kids video segments and games; reading aloud of theme-related books; and hands-on activities in four learning centers to reinforce the concepts and skills presented in the day’s lesson.
