COLUMBUS, OHIO, September 3, 2013 89.7 NPR News, the all-day NPR news radio station of WOSU Public Media, was awarded the 2013 Best News Operation by the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists. The 2013 “Ohio’s Best Journalism Competition was presented collaboratively by the Society of Professional Journalists” chapters in Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland.
Four first place awards were given to 89.7 NPR News in a variety of categories, as well as two second place awards, with another second place award going to the local public affairs program on WOSU TV, Columbus on the Record.
Full details of the 2013 Ohio’s Best Journalism Competition are as follows:
- Best Editor First place to 89.7 NPR News Reporter Sam Hendren for Saving a Church Without a Parish about the efforts to restore St. Leos in Columbus.
- Best Criminal Justice Reporting First place to 89.7 NPR News Reporter Sam Hendren for Too Many Police- Involved Shootings in Columbus, a two-part examination of the use of deadly force by local officers.
- Best Health Care Feature Reporting – “ First place to 89.7 NPR News Managing Editor Tom Borgerding for “Free Medical Clinics Track Health Care Changes“, regarding the impact The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act may have on free clinics.
- Best Spot News First place to 89.7 NPR News Managing Editor Tom Borgerding and 89.7 NPR News Morning Anchor Steve Brown for “Train Derailment and Fire,” covering the train derailment in July of 2012 south of the Ohio State Fairgrounds.
- Best Public Affairs Program – Radio Second place to “All Sides with Ann Fisher“ on 89.7 NPR News.
- Best Public Affairs Program – TV – Second place to “Columbus on the Record“ on WOSU TV.
- Best Investigative Reporting – Second place to 89.7 NPR News Reporter Mandie Trimble for “Seedy Motels,” a look at the impact of dilapidated motels on the East Side of Columbus.
Entries were judged by out-of-state chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists and professional organizations. “Ohio’s Best Journalism Competition” honors journalists who fulfill the SPJ mission: defense of the First Amendment, support of literacy, resistance to censorship, advocacy for openness of public records and meetings, media self-criticism and community service.
89.7 FM NPR News is the only all-day NPR news radio station in central Ohio and specializes in news and public affairs programming, including “All Sides with Ann Fisher”, “Morning Edition”, and “All Things Considered.” Live audio streaming of the station is also available at wosu.org.
WOSU TV is a PBS member station (simulcast on WPBO TV in Portsmouth) and features well-known children’s, public affairs, science, and nature programs as well as locally produced shows such as “Columbus on the Record” and “In the Know”. National news programming such as “PBS NewsHour”, “Washington Week with Gwen Ifill” and “Frontline” is also broadcast.
